A Parisian enigma unfolds before you. This is the Boulevard Circulaire Est. Or rather it was. Now it is the Boulevard Patrick Devedjian a name honoring a former departmental president.
The Boulevard Circulaire Est’s story is one of transformation. It began life in the 1970s. Then it was a one-way ring road isolating La Défense from Puteaux and Courbevoie. Think urban highway. Pedestrians used bridges or underpasses.
The A14 motorway opened in 1996. This relieved the boulevard of much transit traffic especially heavy vehicles. The boulevard became primarily a service road for La Défense and nearby areas.
But the original design had flaws. It created a cut-off between La Défense and neighboring areas. Navigation was difficult for users. Noise and pollution were high. Pedestrians and cyclists couldn’t easily use it.
So from 2004 to 2008 a renovation began. The Gambetta viaduct was demolished. This improved pedestrian crossings. A two-kilometer two-way cycle path was created. Landscaping added green spaces.
The aim was to reduce car dominance. The goal was to create smoother routes. It was about creating quieter traffic flow and more green spaces. The project aimed to create a more urban fabric.
Further work continued from 2009 to 2012. Consultations took place. The goal was to create a more urban and human-friendly boulevard. This included mixed uses and better connections. The numerous tower projects provided opportunities.
The renovation aimed to improve public spaces. The objective was to ease connections between La Défense and Courbevoie. The former urban highway was transformed into a genuine urban boulevard.
Work continues even now. The southern part of the boulevard is being redeveloped. Innovative road designs are being tested. These include smart lighting and intelligent traffic management systems.
The boulevard is becoming a showcase for innovation. The aim is to make traffic flow smoothly and safely. The project promotes the sharing of the road between cars and soft mobility.
