High above the Elbe Valley, the Hoher Stein whispers tales of ancient seas and sweeping vistas. Here, where the city of Dresden unfolds beneath us, we stand on the precipice of time, atop a former cliff of a Cretaceous sea. This geological marvel, the Hoher Stein, offers a glimpse into a world long past. The tower itself, first erected in 1864 by Friedrich August Frohberg, has witnessed the changing landscape of Dresden for over a century and a half. Originally known as “Frohbergs Burg,” the Hoher Stein has undergone several renovations over the years, standing as a resilient testament to human ingenuity. In fact, due to its delicate condition, the tower was closed for a period, reopening its doors to eager visitors in December 2019 after extensive restoration. The Hoher Stein isn’t just a tower; it’s a time capsule. The cliff on which it stands is composed of two distinct types of rock. The base is formed by Monzonite, a sturdy rock dating back an astonishing 330 million years. Above it lies yellowish Marlstone, a sedimentary rock deposited around 90 million years ago when the Cretaceous sea covered this area. Look across at the Weißeritz bank. You can clearly see the reddish, weathered Monzonite overlaid by the yellow, layered Marlstone, a visual representation of millions of years of geological history. The Hoher Stein holds even more secrets. The Marlstone around the tower is famous for its abundance of fossils. Over 80 species of marine fossils have been discovered here, remnants of the creatures that once inhabited the ancient sea. Some of these remarkable finds are displayed at the Museum of Mineralogy and Geology in Dresden. While the Hoher Stein itself is protected, making fossil collecting here forbidden, the thrill of standing where such discoveries were made is palpable. From the viewing platform, 190 meters above sea level, we have a breathtaking view. We can see across to Dölzschen and down into the Plauenschen Grund, a valley carved by the Weißeritz River. The Hoher Stein offers not just a panorama of modern Dresden but a window into its deep past, connecting us to the forces that shaped this land millions of years ago.
