Remember Henry VIII? It was in the 1530s that he ordered the construction of St James’s Palace on the site of a former leper hospital.

Welcome to the area of St James’s. We find ourselves in a district steeped in royal history and aristocratic elegance. Although today we are talking about the area around the palace, it is important to also talk about the churches.

St James The Great is a testament to London’s rich tapestry of historical layers. The area, once part of the royal park, was developed in the 1660s. Charles II granted the right to develop the area to Henry Jermyn. He wanted it to be a residential area for the aristocracy. St James’s Square became the heart of this new development.

Until World War II, St James’s remained an exclusive residential area. Notable residences included St James’s Palace and Lancaster House. This area derived its name from a 12th-century leper hospital. It was dedicated to Saint James the Less.

Did you know that St James’s was once part of St Martin in the Fields parish? Attempts to separate St James’s were initially resisted. However, the construction of St James’s Church in 1684 changed everything. A new parish of St James was created in 1685.

St James’s streets have stories etched in their very names. St Alban’s Street is named after Henry Jermyn. Jermyn Street itself also pays homage to him. Duke of York Street tips its hat to James II. Piccadilly got its name from Piccadilly Hall.

Today, St James’s is a commercial hub with some of the highest rents in London. Christie’s auction house is based in King Street. Fine wine merchants like Berry Brothers and Rudd also call St James’s home.

St James’s is also known as Clubland. It is home to many of London’s best-known gentlemen’s clubs. These clubs have served as meeting places for high society figures.

The area of St James’s maintains its regal charm. It blends history, beauty, and commerce. The area is a vibrant part of London’s West End.

As we conclude our visit to St James’s remember its journey. From a leper hospital to a palace, from aristocratic residences to gentlemen’s clubs, St James’s has evolved. Today St James’s stands as a symbol of London’s enduring appeal. Its streets tell tales of royalty, wealth, and cultural transformation.
