The Centre for Art and Communication is also known as “L’Or du Rhin”. This is a story about a building that is a paradox. It is a sturdy and powerful structure but at the same time, it is dynamic and full of energy. This gold-toned building rises up from the ground like a beacon of modern art.

The Centre for Art and Communication was built between 1971 and 1974 by the Cuban architect, artist, sculptor and painter Ricardo Porro. He designed some of the buildings for the Havana Biennial. Porro was commissioned by the financier Robert Altmann to create a building that would house his offices and his private collection of paintings. The architect wanted to create a space that would reflect the unique character of Liechtenstein, a small country with a big personality. The building is designed in three parts. The offices are on the ground floor and large exhibition spaces are on the upper floors. These spaces were designed in a way that also serves as the entrance to the private offices of the financier Robert Altmann. So he could admire his collection at any time.

The building’s distinctive feature is its façade. It is made of glass, metal and a complex of hanging lamellae made of anodised aluminium with a golden shimmer. Initially, the lamellae moved and emitted sounds, but during a December storm, several of them were blown off the facade. They had to be fitted with a ball joint system to prevent them from moving again. This ended the original design and its intended sound effect. However, the building still stands as a testament to the vision of Ricardo Porro and his unique approach to modern architecture.

The Centre for Art and Communication can’t be visited from the inside. The building stands as a dramatic silhouette against the backdrop of the Alps. While it can’t be explored, its exterior is a stunning example of modern architecture. The building is a powerful reminder that Liechtenstein, though small, is not afraid to make a big statement.
