Did you know that the melody of La Marseillaise was composed in a single night? Right here in Strasbourg Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle created France’s national anthem. A military officer and a man of letters Rouget de Lisle was more than just a composer. He was a witness to the tumultuous events of the French Revolution. He experienced firsthand the fervor and the fear. He saw the rise and fall of kings and republics.

Rouget de Lisle’s life was interwoven with the fabric of France itself. Born in Lons-le-Saunier in 1760 he received a military education in Paris. He later served in the Army of the Rhine stationed in Strasbourg. It was there during a dinner hosted by Mayor Dietrich that he was challenged to write a war song. The request came amidst the declaration of war against Austria. Rouget de Lisle rose to the occasion. He composed both the music and lyrics in a single night.

The song initially called “Chant de guerre pour l’armée du Rhin” quickly spread. It was sung by the Marseillais as they marched on Paris in July 1792. Parisians adopted the song calling it La Marseillaise. This simple war song became a powerful symbol of French national identity. It evolved into a revolutionary anthem.

Rouget de Lisle’s later life was far from celebratory. Despite his creation’s lasting impact he faced hardships. He was even imprisoned during the Reign of Terror. Later he found himself in precarious financial situations. He wrote other songs and works but none achieved La Marseillaise’s fame. Despite the political turmoil he remained a monarchist.

Louis-Philippe I eventually granted him a pension recognizing his contribution to France’s cultural heritage. However recognition did not fully alleviate his struggles. He spent his final days in Choisy-le-Roi where he passed away in 1836.

His legacy though transcends his personal story. La Marseillaise a song born from a single night of inspiration continues to resonate around the world. It embodies French patriotism and revolutionary spirit. Standing here we are reminded of the lasting impact of one man’s artistic creation during a period of profound social and political change. The anthem’s power lies not only in its musical composition but in its enduring connection to the spirit of France. It stands as a testament to the profound role of art in shaping national identity. The music you hear today echoes across centuries. It echoes across battles and revolutions.
