Have you ever dreamt of stepping inside a Gothic fairytale? Strawberry Hill House beckons you. Right before your eyes stands this architectural marvel a testament to Horace Walpole’s eccentric genius.

Built in 1747 from a couple of humble cottages Strawberry Hill House began its life as ‘Chopp’d Straw Hall’. Walpole the son of Britain’s first Prime Minister envisioned a ‘little Gothic castle’. He wasn’t alone in this fantastical project. He collaborated with a ‘Committee of Taste’ a group of friends including John Chute and Richard Bentley. Together they transformed the site into a whimsical blend of Gothic and Georgian styles.

Strawberry Hill’s popularity soared. It became a major tourist attraction in Walpole’s lifetime. He even published rules for visitors no children allowed. Imagine the grandeur of entertaining royalty and foreign ambassadors within these walls. Walpole’s house wasn’t just a residence it was a statement. A pioneering example of the Gothic Revival that swept through 18th and 19th century Europe.

The house’s interior was as captivating as its exterior. Gothic vaulting medieval tombs and rose windows adorned its rooms. The poet Thomas Gray described it as ‘all Gothicism gold and looking glass’. This wasn’t mere imitation. Walpole infused his unique aesthetic creating an atmosphere of romance and whimsy.

Tragedy struck after Walpole’s death in 1797. The house changed hands several times. One owner George the Seventh Earl of Waldegrave even planned to let it fall into ruin. He held a ‘Great Sale’ dispersing much of Walpole’s precious collection.

Fortunately Strawberry Hill House wasn’t destined for demolition. Lady Waldegrave saved it. She expanded the property adding a grand new wing now known as the Waldegrave Wing. Later in 1923 St Mary’s Catholic College acquired the property.

Today after meticulous restoration you stand before a revitalized Strawberry Hill House. It’s a captivating blend of history art and architecture. It’s a place where dreams of Gothic grandeur come alive. A place where the spirit of Horace Walpole still lingers in the air. Step inside and let the magic of Strawberry Hill House transport you.
