Fuel switching. That’s the secret behind the Riverside Generating Plant’s transformation. The Riverside Generating Plant has stood on the banks of the Mississippi River since 1911. It has seen Minneapolis grow and change. The plant itself underwent a major transformation. It switched from coal power to natural gas, marking a commitment to cleaner energy. This repowering project, completed in 2009, was no small feat. It involved retiring the old coal-fired boilers and replacing them with two state-of-the-art combustion turbine generators. These new units, along with heat recovery steam generators, now work in tandem with a revamped steam turbine. This combined cycle system allows the Riverside Generating Plant to generate more power. Impressively, it does so with significantly reduced emissions. The transition from coal to natural gas resulted in a 99% decrease in sulfur dioxide emissions and a 96% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions. This shift reflects a dedication to cleaner air. It’s a testament to how the Riverside Generating Plant has adapted to meet the needs of a changing world.
