Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Gage Park, rises Eric Solorio Academy High School. It stands as a testament to community spirit and the enduring legacy of a fallen hero. Eric Solorio Academy High School opened its doors in 2010. It was built in response to the burgeoning student population on Chicago’s southwest side. The school’s namesake, Chicago Police Officer Eric Solorio, tragically lost his life in a car accident while on patrol in 2006. He was a young man dedicated to serving his community. He was also on the cusp of graduating from Loyola University Chicago with a degree in Spanish, a degree awarded posthumously. Eric Solorio Academy High School carries on his spirit of service and dedication. The school boasts a “Gold” level certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design schools’ rating system. Its prominent green roof covers a significant 40 percent of the building. This eco-conscious design reflects the school’s commitment to a sustainable future. It was also a pioneering effort, being the first to implement CPS’s Urban Model High School (UMHS) design. It was also part of the Modern Schools Across Chicago (MSAC) program. Within its walls, Eric Solorio Academy High School offers a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum. Students can challenge themselves with Advanced Placement courses in a wide range of subjects. These include English Language and Literature, Environmental Science, Human Geography, US History, Psychology, Spanish Language and Literature, Biology, Physics, Calculus, Statistics, and Art. Beyond academics, the school pulses with extracurricular activities. From the thrill of competition on the athletic field to the creative expression found in clubs, there is something for every student. The boys’ soccer team etched their name in Solorio history. They achieved the school’s first state championship with a resounding 6-0 victory against Gibault Catholic High School in the 2017 IHSA 2A state championship. This victory stands as a symbol of the school’s dedication to excellence. The school also achieved a “Strong” designation in the Creative Schools Certification program, demonstrating its nurturing environment for artistic growth. The school also offers an array of clubs, catering to diverse interests. Students can explore anime, chess, cooking, debate, graphic design, music, robotics and more. Eric Solorio Academy High School is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a vibrant hub of learning, growth, and community.
