The scent of incense hangs heavy in the air. This is the Gereja HKBP in Singapore. A simple yet significant place. It’s a testament to faith resilience and community.

For decades the Gereja HKBP has called the Tamil Methodist Church home. This wasn’t always the plan. The story begins long ago. Batak Christians arriving in Singapore in 1938 formed a prayer fellowship. This eventually became the official Huria Kristen Batak Protestan. It was registered as a society in 1948.

The Gereja HKBP’s early days were marked by hardship. World War II disrupted their services. They faced the challenge of finding a place of worship. They found it in the Tamil Methodist Church at 8 Short Street. This unlikely partnership blossomed. It is a story of shared space and mutual respect.

Today the Gereja HKBP thrives here. Around 130 people regularly attend services. They worship in Indonesian and Batak languages. Sermons are always in Indonesian. The congregation actively engages in various activities. These include Sunday services children’s ministry and a choir. Monthly fellowship gatherings and Bible studies also take place.

The Gereja HKBP in Singapore is more than a church. It is a symbol of enduring faith. It demonstrates the power of community. It’s a vibrant hub for Batak Christians in Singapore. It highlights the generosity of the Tamil Methodist Church. A small unassuming building holds a significant story. It is a true testament to perseverance and faith. A quiet witness to the enduring spirit of the Batak people far from home.
