Around 10 BC a Roman legion established a camp in Bonn-Castell. This marked the beginning of Bonn-Castell’s rich history. The camp expanded over the years. By 40 AD around 7000 soldiers of the Legio I Minervia were stationed there. This large military presence attracted craftsmen and merchants. A settlement canabae legionis grew up alongside the camp. It became a cornerstone of what is now Bonn. Today only street names and the occasional glimpse of a Roman harbor at low tide remain as physical reminders of the Roman presence in Bonn-Castell.
Bonn-Castell wasn’t just a Roman military base. It later housed the Husaren-Regiment Konig Wilhelm I. This regiment occupied a now-vanished barracks east of Graurheindorfer Strasse from 1852 until the unit’s dissolution. The area underwent significant development in the 1970s. High-rise apartment buildings were constructed near Romerstrasse boosting the population of Bonn-Castell.
The name Bonn-Castell itself is relatively recent. Until 2003 the district was known as Bonn-Nord. This caused confusion with the nearby Nordstadt. The renaming to Bonn-Castell honored its Roman past. The name Castell refers to the Roman castra the military encampment which is the origin of the city.
Today Bonn-Castell is a vibrant district. It is home to many federal agencies. These include the Finance Ministry and the Interior Ministry. It also houses important institutions like the Bundesanstalt fur Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht BaFin. The LVR-Klinik Bonn a major psychiatric hospital is also located there. Bonn-Castell’s proximity to the Rhine provides beautiful recreational spaces. The Romerbad a large outdoor swimming pool is particularly popular. It even hosted swimming competitions for the 1989 European Swimming Championships.
