The Southside Unity Center of Christianity stands tall a beacon of hope for its community. Its roots run deep into the city’s history. In 1927 a small group of women working in a beauty salon discovered the power of Unity teachings. Their shared faith blossomed into a small group. It met in a home on South Calumet Avenue. This humble beginning marked the birth of South Side Unity Center.

The early years were marked by a moving journey. The congregation moved twice before finally settling into its current location at 9320 South Ashland Avenue in 1983. The church’s early years lacked a formally ordained minister. Guest speakers filled the pulpit. Mrs Doris Spaulding a minister from another Unity Church helped arrange these speakers.

The Southside Unity Center of Christianity wasn’t just about sermons. It nurtured its community. It witnessed pivotal moments in its history. In 1941 Henrietta Gorden became the first ordained minister. The name was changed to Southside Unity Center of Christianity (SSUCC). Over the decades the church has seen many ministers come and go each leaving their unique mark. Rev Hazel I Kimmons deserves special mention. She led the congregation into their current building. The year 2002 was memorable. A new bookstore opened named in honor of Nettie Ross a long time member.

Today the Southside Unity Center of Christianity continues to thrive. It remains a spiritual home for many. It celebrates its African American heritage. A special “African American Celebration” Sunday honors this heritage. It features traditional garments African cuisine and community presentations. The church welcomes all visitors. Its doors open every Sunday at 11:00 AM. This is a place of hope where faith blossoms and community flourishes. It’s a place where history and faith intertwine.
