Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center

Have you ever wondered what a one-room schoolhouse became after its days of chalkboards and primers were over? Here at the Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center, nestled within the sprawling Palos Preserves of Cook County, Illinois, a charming transformation took place. This isn’t your typical nature center. It began as a schoolhouse, built back in 1886 on the old Black Oak Trail. Imagine children trekking to this very spot for their lessons. The original structure replaced an even older log cabin school. Little Red Schoolhouse served its community until 1948. Then, a dedicated local resident, armed with only a mule and some log rollers, moved the building to Camp Kiwanis in 1932. It continued as a school there until 1948. Its final journey brought it to its current location in 1952. Just three years later, in 1955, the Little Red Schoolhouse opened its doors again, this time as a nature center. The three R’s were replaced with lessons about the natural world, the plants, animals, and the very earth beneath our feet. In 2010, a modern visitor center joined the historic schoolhouse. Inside, you’ll find interactive exhibits and live animals native to the area. You can explore the history of the region through fascinating museum displays, even coming face-to-face with live snakes, turtles, and frogs! And, of course, the original one-room schoolhouse still stands, offering a glimpse into education in a bygone era. Outside, the Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center boasts three miles of trails winding through woodlands, wetlands, and prairie. The Farm Pond Trail, a short and easy quarter-mile loop, is perfect for families with young children. For a longer trek, try the Black Oak Trail. This 1.75-mile path takes you along Long John Slough, where an observation blind provides a front-row seat to the area’s diverse wildlife. The trail continues through a beautiful glacial highland of oak woods and prairie. Another option is the one-mile White Oak Trail, offering a peaceful escape into nature. Hikers craving even more exploration can connect to other trails that crisscross the vast 15,000 acres of the Palos Preserves.
