“A humble chapel? It became a beacon.” That’s what Father Etienne Ery might have said. Welcome to the Église Jésus-Adolescent. This unassuming church in Montfermeil holds a captivating history. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to faith resilience and community.
The Église Jésus-Adolescent wasn’t always this beautiful building. Construction began between 1930 and 1934. Thanks to Abbé Baudet’s efforts the land was purchased. The initial structure was simple almost a shed. It served as a meeting place for catechism classes. Occasional services were held here. Sunday masses were at Saint-Pierre Saint-Paul.
Then a significant change happened. Monseigneur Alexandre Renard elevated the chapel’s status. He established the Jésus-Adolescent parish in the 1930s. Father Etienne Ery a Hungarian refugee became the parish priest. He served until his death in 1998.
The church’s simplicity is striking. It’s a rectangle with a modest porch. Eight panels of stained glass illuminate the side walls. Father Ery acquired these inexpensively. He arranged them symbolically. The left side depicts Redemption. The right side represents the Church.
Inside you’ll discover remarkable artwork. A copper relief of the Virgin Mary graces the altar. Jesus on the cross is a copy of a devotional Christ from Perpignan. An icon of Our Lady of Jasna Gora hangs above the door. It’s a gift from Polish pilgrims. A 17th-century statue of Saint Peter stands near the altar. Its base contains soil from the catacombs of Saint Prisca in Rome.
The 14 Stations of the Cross are unique. They’re photographs by Yves Guillemaut a parishioner. A painting of Saint Maximilian Kolbe hangs on the left. It was given by pilgrims who prayed at the saint’s cell in Poland.
The large illuminated cross in the garden is another symbol. It’s ten meters tall and weighs 1500 kg. The cross’s design was inspired by pilgrimages to Poland and Eastern Europe. The IHS symbol at the top means Jesus Savior of Mankind.
The campanile houses three bells. Julia Giselle and Franck their names honor parishioners who served the church. Their ringing calls people to worship. Behind the presbytery is a replica of the Lourdes grotto. It’s a place for quiet reflection and veneration of the Virgin Mary. A statue of Saint Thérèse is also here. This humble church is a powerful place. It’s a testament to faith in the face of adversity. It’s a living legacy of those who built it and those who continue to worship here.
