Underneath the Jakarta sky stands Masjid Al-Hidayah a testament to faith and resilience. Its story begins not in grandeur but in humble beginnings. Built in 1935 it was initially called Masjid Jami an-Nur. A simple structure it stood on 4000 square meters of land a gift from H James and others. The mosque’s floors were bare earth covered in pandan mats. It could only hold about 70 people.

Yet Masjid Al-Hidayah was far from insignificant. It served as a crucial base for training young Indonesian Muslims. These young men formed the Hizbullah/Sabilillah fighters a force feared by the colonial powers. Both the Dutch and the Japanese closely watched the mosque suspicious of its activities. Ust Burhanuddin a first-generation leader recalled being arrested by the Dutch for teaching verses about jihad. The colonial government strictly forbade translating the Quran into Malay especially passages about jihad.

Masjid Al-Hidayah’s strategic importance continued under Japanese occupation. Intelligence reports pointed to underground movements operating from the mosque. However clever planning and careful actions by its leaders and congregation protected the mosque’s activities. They successfully balanced religious teachings with the struggle for independence.

After Indonesia gained independence Masjid Al-Hidayah’s focus shifted to rebuilding. Every three years expansions took place. The mosque steadily grew more permanent. Even during the era of communist threats Masjid Al-Hidayah played a significant role. During the G30S PKI coup the congregation actively fought against those involved in the attempted communist takeover.

The mosque continued to thrive. Renovations in January 1991 cost around Rp300 million. The goal was to create a two-story mosque accommodating over 2000 worshippers. Masjid Al-Hidayah has become a symbol of faith perseverance and community strength in the heart of Jakarta. Its history reflects the struggles and triumphs of the Indonesian people a story written into its very stones. It is a place where prayers ascend and the spirit of Indonesia endures.
