“A giant among rockets, isn’t it?” That’s what visitors often say when they first see the Ariane 4 Sculpture in Bremen. This isn’t just any sculpture. It’s a reminder of Europe’s space ambitions. It reminds us of when Europe captured 50% of the market in launching commercial satellites.
The Ariane 4 was a versatile launch system. It was designed by the European Space Agency. Arianespace manufactured and marketed it. This rocket was a workhorse. It made 113 successful launches from June 15, 1988, to February 15, 2003.
Ariane 4 proved ideal for launching various satellites. These included communications, Earth observation, and scientific research satellites. This launcher could hold two or four strap-on boosters. It could also have none. This allowed it to lift satellites of different weights into orbit. It could launch satellites weighing from 2,000 to nearly 4,300 kg into Geostationary Transfer Orbit GTO. That’s nearly three times as much as the Ariane 3 launcher.
The Ariane 4 program got approved by ESA in 1982. It was designed to deliver heavier payloads. It aimed for a lower cost per kilogram than previous Ariane rockets. This rocket was an evolution of existing technologies. This approach quickly gained support from most ESA members. They funded its development and operation. The Ariane 4 was the ultimate development in the Ariane rocket family. It featured stretched stages. It had a strengthened structure. New avionics were included. The Ariane 4 AR 40 was the basic version. It stood 58.4 meters tall. It had a diameter of 3.8 meters. Its liftoff mass was 245,000 kg. It could carry a maximum payload of 2,100 kg to GTO. Or 5,000 kg to low Earth orbit LEO.
Since its first flight, Ariane 4 achieved a high success rate. It flew 116 times. 113 launches were successful. That’s a 97.4% success rate. The Ariane 4 became the basis for European satellite launches.
