Imagine a church born from revolution. That’s the Philippine Independent Church. It’s also known as the Iglesia Filipina Independiente or the Aglipayan Church. Its story is one of nationalism faith and independence.

The late 19th century was a turbulent time in the Philippines. Filipinos revolted against Spanish colonizers. They also resented the Spanish clergy’s control over the Roman Catholic Church. This resentment fueled a desire for a church led by Filipinos for Filipinos.

Enter Gregorio Aglipay a Roman Catholic priest. He became a key figure in the revolution. His anti-Spanish activities led to his excommunication in 1899. Aglipay joined forces with Isabelo de los Reyes. De los Reyes was a writer labor leader and senator. He had been imprisoned for criticizing Spanish clergy. Together they co-founded the Philippine Independent Church in 1902. Aglipay became its supreme bishop in 1903.

The Philippine Independent Church embraced Filipino nationalism. It sought genuine independence democracy and abundant life for Filipinos. The church attracted around two million former Roman Catholics. It offered an alternative to Spanish-controlled religion.

However the early years weren’t easy. In 1906 the Philippine Supreme Court ruled that church properties had to be returned to the Roman Catholic Church. This was a major setback. The Aglipayan Church had to find new places to worship.

Under Aglipay’s leadership the church initially adopted Unitarian beliefs. This meant rejecting the Holy Trinity. However after his death in 1941 the church shifted back to a more Catholic position.

A significant event occurred in 1948. The Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States consecrated three bishops of the Philippine Independent Church. This established a close association between the two churches. In 1961 the Philippine Independent Church gained full communion with the Church of England and the Old Catholic churches.

Today the Philippine Independent Church continues its mission. It empowers the poor deprived and oppressed. It advocates for human rights and democracy. The church has schools seminaries and is involved in peace-building efforts.

The Philippine Independent Church maintains its unique identity. It’s a member of the World Council of Churches. It has strong relationships with Anglican churches worldwide. In 1999 it signed a partnership covenant with the United Church of Christ in the Philippines.

Its mission is about empowering the poor promoting justice and advocating for a nation free from foreign domination. The Philippine Independent Church seeks to be a pillar of Philippine society. It continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. It is steeped in nationalist history and the struggles of Filipino workers.
