The Valko, Mario Luis Stele, honors Teniente Mario Luis Valko. He was a pilot who lost his life in the South Atlantic conflict. Mario Luis Valko was born in Buenos Aires. He entered the Escuela de Aviación Militar in 1977. He graduated as an alférez in 1980. His first assignment was at the III Brigada Aérea in Reconquista.

In 1982, Mario Luis Valko was assigned to the IV attack squadron. This squadron was part of the IX Brigada Aérea in Comodoro Rivadavia. Only 23 years old, he specialized as a fighter pilot. He then served in the Guerra de Malvinas.

On May 24, 1982, Mario Luis Valko was on a mission. It was an exploration and reconnaissance mission. He flew an IA-58 Pucará A-540. His plane crashed into the Argentine Sea near the Golfo San Jorge. His remains were recovered. They were buried in Morón, Buenos Aires province.

After his death, Mario Luis Valko was promoted. He posthumously received the “La Nación Argentina al Muerto en Combate” award. He was declared a national hero. This declaration was made through Law 24.950.

Each year, people commemorate Mario Luis Valko. The group is led by Juan Heupel. Heupel participated in the rescue of Valko. They travel to the site of the plane crash. They use all-terrain vehicles and bicycles. This journey covers about 80 kilometers. Upon arrival, they sing the Argentine National Anthem. The atmosphere is filled with deep emotion.
