Have you ever felt the calming presence of a mosque amidst the bustle of a city? Masjid Baiturrohim in Jakarta offers exactly that. Located within the complex of the MPR/DPR building in Senayan it stands as an oasis of serenity. Built between 1993 and 1997 Masjid Baiturrohim is a unique structure unlike any other in Indonesia.
Its design is truly remarkable. Inspired by a mosque in the Philippines it resembles a Tanjung flower. The overall shape is geometric. Bold pointed lines define the building. It’s painted a vibrant green. The octagonal dome is particularly striking with its sharply pointed edges.
Masjid Baiturrohim is situated on higher ground. This makes it stand out among the surrounding buildings. It’s a prominent landmark even though it’s smaller than many in the complex. Before entering the main building you pass through a pendopo a covered porch. This acts as a transition zone a liminal space. Steps paved with brick and ceramic lead up to the main structure.
The main entrance is surrounded by a terrace. Intricate carvings adorn the massive teakwood doors. These beautiful carvings depict leaf motifs. A giant drum is placed beside the terrace. It’s 1.97 meters in diameter and 3 meters long. The wood comes from the forests of Blora. The skin is made from Australian cowhide.
Inside the mosque you’ll find a surprisingly spacious interior. There are only two wooden support pillars. Ornate decorations adorn the walls. A stunning chandelier shaped like a Tanjung flower hangs beneath the dome. The minimalist design of the front is a contrast to the rest. A relatively small pulpit is set against a simple white wall. No elaborate ornamentation is present.
The main prayer hall is two stories high. The upper level encircles the main prayer area. This upper level serves as a prayer space for women. Masjid Baiturrohim means House of Compassion.
