Hidden among the bustling streets of Jakarta stands Gereja Kristen Jawa Grogol. Its unassuming exterior belies a rich history. This church is a testament to faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of the Javanese Christian community.

Gereja Kristen Jawa Grogol’s story is interwoven with the broader narrative of the Gereja Kristen Jawa (GKJ) in Jakarta. The GKJ Jakarta itself began as a merging of Javanese Christians who worshipped at different churches. Differences in opinion initially delayed the formation of a unified Javanese congregation. Some members wanted the name to include “Gereformeerde”. This caused a split. One group moved to Christelijke Standaard School Kwitang. The other remained at HThS Salemba.

Finally on June 21 1942 the Kwitang group became the Gereja Kristen Jawa in Jakarta. Importantly this was without the “Gereformeerde” prefix. The Salemba group welcomed this decision. On August 30 1942 a joyful unification ceremony took place. The new church started with 121 members. From this single congregation eleven more churches have since emerged. These churches in turn have established seven more. The original 121 members have grown to tens of thousands. Gereja Kristen Jawa Grogol stands as a proud part of this legacy.
