Established in 1892 Cicero Bible Church stands as a testament to unwavering faith. Its story begins not in a grand cathedral but a humble schoolhouse. The Morton Park School House to be exact. A small group of dedicated Christians met there. They formed the Morton Park Church Association.

Their commitment blossomed. A year later the Morton Park Congregational Church was born. This was 1893 a year Chicago hosted the World’s Fair. Dwight L Moody’s evangelistic outreach was a powerful backdrop to their burgeoning community.

Growth spurred a move. In 1898 services shifted to the Morton Park Club House. A wood-frame church building followed in 1903. But times were challenging. The congregation dwindled to just 25 souls. Closure seemed inevitable.

Then came a turning point. William McCarrell a recent Moody Bible Institute graduate arrived. He filled the pulpit in 1913 for a mere $5 a week. His leadership revitalized the church. It grew so much that a brick structure was built alongside the original in 1921.

Still the church expanded. A new building was constructed in 1927 seating 1400. The name officially became Cicero Bible Church. The dedication took place on September 29 1929. Ironically the stock market crashed just weeks later plunging the nation into the Great Depression.

The church faced financial hardship. Yet the congregation’s faith remained strong. Members donated precious possessions gold jewelry wedding rings even a gold pencil. Pastor McCarrell even devised “Joash boxes” inspired by the Bible. These helped raise funds to pay off the building. The final payment was made in 1943.

Cicero Bible Church became a beacon. It stood firm against theological liberalism. It played a crucial role in forming the Independent Fundamental Churches of America in 1930. This association championed core biblical doctrines.

Under McCarrell’s leadership the church thrived. It launched the Fisherman’s Club a men’s evangelistic group. This group meticulously documented its impact. They counseled hundreds of thousands. Thousands professed faith in Christ. Millions of gospel tracts were distributed. Fourteen daughter churches were established. The church even ran a radio station and printing press supporting missionaries across the globe.

Today Cicero Bible Church continues its mission. It serves a diverse congregation. It reflects the changing demographics of Cicero itself. Its story is a legacy of faith perseverance and unwavering commitment to the Gospel. This legacy continues to inspire. It shows how a small group in a schoolhouse can become a vibrant church.
