“What shall we call it?” That’s the question that buzzed through the Weißeritz valley in the early 1920s. The towns of Deuben Döhlen and Potschappel were about to become one. This is the story of Gründung Freital.

Imagine Freital not as a place but as an idea. An idea born from coal dust and factory smoke. For centuries this valley thrived on mining. Villages grew around the pits. By the early 20th century Deuben Döhlen and Potschappel had become significant industrial hubs.

But progress demanded unity. The late 19th century saw initial talks of merging these villages. But discussions gained momentum in the early 1920s. On October 1 1921 the agreement was signed in Döhlen’s town hall. Freital was born.

But what to call this new town? The debate was fierce. “Deupodö-Stadt” was suggested a clumsy blend of the three towns’ names. “Dreistadt” or Three-City was another option.

Town councillor Hermann Henker offered a different vision. He proposed “Freital” meaning free valley. It captured the spirit of the place. The free-flowing Weißeritz River and the independent spirit of its people.

Freital began to grow. In 1924 it became an independent town. Dr Carl Wedderkopf became its first mayor. He saw Freital as a town of work. A town built in the machine age. Wedderkopf noted that it lacked the glorious past of other German cities. But its strength lay in its industry and labor.

The town became a hotbed of social democracy. In the Weimar Republic Freital stood apart. It was the only town in Saxony with a socialist mayor. Nearly one in ten residents belonged to the Social Democratic Party. They created a “welfare island” with clubs and leisure activities.

The name Freital also implies something different. A model city free from exploitation and oppression.

Today Freital stands as a testament to its industrial heritage. It is also a symbol of unity and progress. The story of Gründung Freital is not just about merging villages. It is about forging a new identity in the heart of Saxony’s free valley.
