KVI’s history stretches back to November 24 1926. It first aired on 1280 kilocycles. At that time the station was licensed to Tacoma. By 1932 KVI had moved to 570 AM. This is its permanent home.
During the Golden Age of Radio KVI was a CBS affiliate. It broadcast dramas comedies and news. Sports game shows and big band broadcasts also aired on KVI.
In 1949 KVI relocated to Seattle. Its power increased to 5000 watts. KVI broadcast from a single tower on Vashon Island. The studios moved into the Camlin Hotel in Downtown Seattle. KVI then became an affiliate of the Mutual Broadcasting System.
In 1959 Gene Autry’s Golden West Broadcasters acquired KVI. In 1964 KVI switched to an adult contemporary format. By 1973 it evolved into middle of the road or MOR. It was during this period that KVI became a dominant player.
KVI served as the flagship station for several sports teams. These teams include the Seattle Pilots Seattle Mariners and Seattle Sounders. KVI also broadcast Washington State University Cougars games.
In 1976 KVI acquired an FM station KETO at 101.5 MHz. The new KVI-FM became a successful Adult Top 40 station. It is now known as KPLZ-FM. Music listening shifted to FM in the 1980s. KVI then added talk shows.
KVI switched to oldies on July 23 1984. By 1992 KVI had a full-time talk radio format. At first it was the balanced alternative. It featured liberal and conservative talk hosts. By 1993 KVI dropped its liberal hosts. The station became almost entirely conservative.
KVI returned to a full-service format in 2010. It mixed oldies recent hits news and traffic updates.
In 2012 KVI flipped back to talk. This time it was Smart Talk. The focus was on entertainment lifestyle and health.
In 2013 Fisher announced it would sell its properties. Sinclair Broadcast Group bought KVI and KOMO-TV. In 2021 Sinclair sold KVI to Lotus Communications.
Today KVI is owned by Lotus Communications. Its studios are located at KOMO Plaza in Seattle. KVI’s transmitter is on Vashon Island. The station’s signal reaches from the U.S. Canada border to Olympia.
Weekdays on KVI feature local and national shows. Local hosts include John Carlson and Ari Hoffman. National programs include The Dana Loesch Show and Red Eye Radio. Two versions of The Lars Larson Show are broadcast. Weekends include shows on money health and cars.
