In 1903, a grand vision took shape on the St. Edward’s University campus. Holy Cross Hall, designed by Nicholas Clayton, opened its doors as a student dormitory. This magnificent Gothic Revival structure has witnessed over a century of history. Holy Cross Hall has weathered storms, both literal and figurative. A 1922 tornado partially demolished the building, leading to hasty repairs and weak concrete floors. Decades later, non-original finishes further obscured its historic charm. Holy Cross Hall stood as a testament to time, bearing the marks of its past.

Holy Cross Hall embarked on a journey of renewal in 2015. St. Edward’s University partnered with Baldridge Architects and Architexas. The goal was to restore the building’s exterior and reimagine its interior. The exterior restoration meticulously addressed each damaged stone and window. The interior, lacking original features, was completely rebuilt. Baldridge Architects paid homage to the past. The renovated design incorporated elements of the original stair tower, wood flooring, and corridor layout. Holy Cross Hall now houses modern offices, breathing new life into its historic walls.

The basement of Holy Cross Hall also underwent a transformation. It became a vibrant hub for faculty training and education. This revitalized space fosters collaboration and learning. It continues the building’s legacy of serving the university community. The renovation of Holy Cross Hall represents a harmonious blend of preservation and progress. It stands as a symbol of St. Edward’s University’s commitment to honoring its history. The building embraces the future, providing a modern learning environment for generations to come.
