“A city within a city?” a young boy asked his mother, gazing out the train window at the sprawling construction site. “That’s Freiham,” his mother replied, “Munich’s newest neighborhood.” Freiham, a district nestled in the western embrace of Munich, is more than just a new suburb. It is a testament to urban planning and a vision of future living. Once just vast stretches of open land, Freiham is rapidly transforming into a vibrant hub, a testament to Munich’s ambitious expansion plans. By 2040, this district, covering an area equivalent to 250 football fields, aims to house over 25,000 residents and provide employment for 15,000 people. This area wasn’t always destined for urban development. In the 1960s, the state capital of Munich acquired this land, envisioning Freiham as one of three “relief towns” to address the housing shortage. However, the project lay dormant for decades, reawakening only in the early 1990s. Freiham Nord, the northern part of the district, is the heart of this urban transformation. Currently under construction, it’s planned to accommodate over 10,000 apartments. This development is being executed in two phases. The first phase, launched in 2016, involves the construction of 4,400 apartments for about 12,000 people across 46 construction sites. The second phase envisions an additional 6,000 apartments. Freiham also features a landscaped park rivaling the size of Westpark and a refreshing swimming lake. A key element of Freiham’s infrastructure is the district center located near the Freiham urban train station. This center promises to be a bustling hub, featuring a mix of residential, commercial, and recreational spaces. Its centerpiece, Mahatma Gandhi Square, is envisioned as a vibrant public space. The square’s design, highlighted by distinctive arcade architecture, will offer a unique visual identity. This urban development is not just about bricks and mortar. It is also about sustainable building practices, as evidenced by its certification from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). Freiham’s convenient access to the Munich S-Bahn network further enhances its appeal. The München Freiham railway station, opened in 2009, ensures seamless connectivity to the heart of Munich.
