From dry downland to thriving wetland, the story of Woodberry Wetlands is a testament to London’s ever-changing landscape. Here we stand before a haven for wildlife, a place once envisioned as anything but. Woodberry Wetlands, opened to the public in 2016, was originally not a wetland at all. For centuries, the area known as Woodberry Down was characterized by rolling meadows, grazing cattle, and small woodlands, home to deer and wild boar. Imagine a landscape dotted with small farms, a far cry from the urban environment we see today. In 1613, the New River Company dramatically altered this landscape. They constructed the New River, an aqueduct designed to bring fresh water from Hertfordshire to London. The reservoirs, now part of Woodberry Wetlands, were built much later, in 1833. They served the growing need for drinking water in Stoke Newington and Stamford Hill. During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, grand mansions lined the banks of the New River, overlooking the reservoirs. Woodberry Down became synonymous with suburban luxury, an early stockbroker belt. However, two World Wars and subsequent neglect led to the decline of the area. The Woodberry Down housing estate was built along the reservoir’s northern bank, housing former slum dwellers. The reservoirs themselves were treated with chlorine and sodium phosphate, rendering them devoid of wildlife. The Woodberry Down estate faced challenges, but the reservoirs themselves were about to undergo a transformation. In 1992, the newly privatized Thames Water put the reservoirs up for sale, with plans to fill them in and build over them. A determined campaign by local residents saved the reservoirs. The use of chemicals ceased, and wildlife began to return. The regeneration of the Woodberry Down Estate followed, and in 2016, Woodberry Wetlands emerged, a testament to community action and the resilience of nature. Now, we can witness the fruits of this transformation. Woodberry Wetlands, a vibrant ecosystem teeming with life, stands as a reminder of the power of conservation and the beauty that can arise from unexpected places.
