Hidden amongst cobbled alleys stands St Mary-at-Hill. A testament to London’s enduring spirit. This magnificent church boasts a history stretching back nearly a thousand years. Initially known as St Mary de Hull or St Mary de la Hulle it was founded in the 12th century. Imagine the bustling harbour of Billingsgate Quay nearby. The church’s name hints at its location on a hill rising steeply from the Thames.

St Mary-at-Hill has witnessed centuries of change. It survived the Great Fire of 1666 though severely damaged. Sir Christopher Wren masterfully rebuilt its interior and east end. He cleverly preserved the medieval walls and added a lantern to the west tower. Wren’s design included a Venetian window and a pediment both sadly lost to time. The church’s interior features impressive free-standing Corinthian columns. They support barrel vaults in a unique Greek cross pattern. A coffered central dome tops it all off.

The church is more than just architecture. It’s a repository of London’s rich history. A hoard of coins known as the Mary Hill Hoard was discovered nearby in the 18th century. This hoard contained the only known coin from the Horndon mint. This makes it a significant archaeological find. St Mary-at-Hill has hosted the Chapel Royal choir and the great composer Thomas Tallis served as organist here. It’s a church with musical roots. Its William Hill organ stands as a testament. It has been partly restored and its full restoration was completed in 2000.

The church held onto its traditions. The Costermongers’ Festival a Fish Harvest Festival was held here. The unique ceremony of Beating the Bounds also took place. Children were gently whipped at points along the parish boundary. This tradition is rarely seen today. St Mary-at-Hill even survived the Blitz. Yet a fire in 1988 caused devastating damage. Its roof and ceiling needed rebuilding. Much of the beautiful woodwork survived. It remains in storage awaiting restoration. Despite this St Mary-at-Hill stands as a symbol of London’s resilience. It continues to serve its community. John Betjeman himself called its interior “the least spoiled and the most gorgeous in the City”. This beautiful Grade I listed building should not be missed. It’s a hidden gem in London’s rich tapestry.
