Imagine strolling through Buenos Aires. You find yourself drawn to a district brimming with life. This is Comuna 5.

Comuna 5 is one of the city’s 15 administrative divisions. It’s made up of Almagro and Boedo. These neighborhoods offer unique experiences.

Comuna 5 sits in the city’s center-east. It covers just 6.7 square kilometers. Yet, it houses a vibrant community. The 2010 census counted 179,005 residents. By 2022, that number had grown to 193,859. This shows Comuna 5 is a growing area.

The history of Comuna 5 reflects Buenos Aires’ own story. In 1994, Argentina’s constitution granted Buenos Aires autonomy. This led to the creation of local administrative divisions. Comuna 5 was born from this shift.

Before, the city was managed by C.G.P.s. These were Centers of Management and Participation. Today, they are called Comunas. In 2011, citizens voted for the first members of the Comunal Board. These seven members serve four-year terms.

Almagro and Boedo each add to Comuna 5’s character. Almagro has a strong Italian influence. It has many beautiful old buildings. Almagro is known as a tango neighborhood. Boedo offers its own attractions.

Almagro’s streets tell stories of immigration. Basques and Italians shaped the area around 1900. They built conventillos or immigrant hotels. These buildings housed many newcomers.

Tango thrives in Almagro. The area’s proximity to the Abasto market made it popular. Carlos Gardel, a famous singer, often visited. In 1930, he even recorded a tango named Almagro.

Several important institutions call Almagro home. The Colégio Pio IX is one. It boasts alumni like Carlos Gardel and President Arturo Illia. Las Violetas coffee house opened in 1884. It remains a popular meeting place.

Almagro also has the Argentine Boxing Federation hall. Many important matches have taken place here. Mariano Moreno and Mariano Acosta schools are known for high educational standards.

In the 1950s, the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional built its Buenos Aires campus in Almagro. Later, the University of Buenos Aires moved its faculty of Humanities here.

Today, Almagro maintains its tango soul. Osvaldo Pugliese, a composer, lived here. He helped create the Casa del Tango complex.

Comuna 5 offers a blend of history and culture. It reflects Buenos Aires’ diverse heritage. From tango halls to historical buildings, there’s something for everyone.
