In 1997, two hospitals—the old Changi Hospital and Toa Payoh Hospital—embarked on a transformative journey. They merged, relocated, and were reborn as Changi General Hospital. Changi General Hospital officially opened its doors on March 28, 1998, in the eastern Singaporean district of Simei. This marked a pivotal moment for Singapore’s healthcare system, as CGH became the first purpose-built general hospital dedicated to serving the east and northeast communities. The hospital’s birth wasn’t a sudden event, but rather a carefully orchestrated transition. The move involved the integration of staff, resources, and medical expertise from both predecessor hospitals, culminating in a seamless transition to the new, modern facility.

Changi General Hospital rapidly expanded its services. It now offers over 23 medical specialties. These range from general surgery and internal medicine to specialized fields like cardiology, ENT, orthopedic surgery, and sports medicine. Six specialist centers reside within its walls: the Breast Centre, the Changi Sports Medicine Centre, the Diabetes Centre, the Geriatric Centre, the Integrated Sleep Service, and the Medical Centre for International Travellers. This breadth of services reflects CGH’s commitment to providing comprehensive care to its diverse patient population. Changi General Hospital holds another distinction. In 2005, it achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the first acute care hospital in Singapore to integrate its services with a community hospital—St. Andrew’s Community Hospital. A sheltered link bridge physically connects the two, symbolizing the seamless transition of care between acute and community settings. This integration emphasizes CGH’s focus on holistic, patient-centered care that extends beyond its own walls. The same year, CGH further solidified its reputation for quality by receiving Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. It even garnered JCI accreditation for its Heart Failure Programme and Acute Myocardial Infarction Programme, making it the first hospital in Singapore to achieve this recognition.

Changi General Hospital continued to grow, integrating the Singapore Sports Medicine Centre in 2010 to bolster its expertise in sports medicine. While CGH became legally independent from SingHealth in 2011, it later rejoined the SingHealth cluster in 2017, strengthening its ties with Singapore’s largest healthcare group. Today, Changi General Hospital stands as a testament to the evolution and advancement of healthcare in Singapore. Its commitment to serving the eastern communities, its focus on specialized care, and its ongoing pursuit of excellence have firmly established its place as a cornerstone of the Singaporean healthcare landscape.
