The First Baptist Church of Wylie wasn’t always here. Its origins lie in the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church of Nickelville. Imagine small gatherings in private homes before 1870. Then came the railroad. Lieutenant Colonel William D Wylie an engineer brought prosperity to Nickelville. The town was renamed Wylie. The church moved with it becoming the Missionary Baptist Church of Wylie around 1887.
In 1905 members bought land on North First Street. They built their first sanctuary. This wasn’t some grand cathedral. It was a simple building. Two doors a large stained-glass window and two prominent steeples. Growth continued. A full-time pastor arrived in 1914. The church expanded to meet the community’s needs.
By 1942 the name officially changed to First Baptist Church of Wylie. The church continued to grow. New buildings were added under various pastors. A bell installed in the 1950s stands near this plaque. It’s a poignant reminder of that era. Reverend Gilbert N Callaway served from 1958 to 1967. Membership soared. Giving increased. He even had a parsonage built a four-bedroom home completed in 1963.
The church celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1970. Members dressed in period clothing. They enjoyed lunch on the lawn. This speaks to the enduring spirit of the First Baptist Church of Wylie. It’s about more than just bricks and mortar. It’s about people their faith and their community.
Further expansion followed in the decades that came after. New auditoriums classrooms and even an event center were added. This plaque commemorates a history of faith service and growth.
