“A magician’s final act,” the old groundskeeper chuckled, “though not the kind he was known for.” He gestured towards a grand marble monument, a testament to both opulence and tragedy. We were standing at the entrance of Piershill Cemetery, a place where the stories of Edinburgh’s past whispered from beneath the weathered headstones. Our attention was drawn to the grave of The Great Lafayette, a man whose life was as captivating as any illusion. Piershill Cemetery holds him, along with his beloved canine companion, Beauty. Sigmund Neuberger, the man behind the dazzling persona of The Great Lafayette, was a star who rivaled even the legendary Houdini. Imagine, crowds flocking to witness his daring escapes and grand illusions, his name synonymous with wonder and spectacle. However, in a tragic twist of fate, the stage lights that illuminated his career also brought about his demise. During a performance at Edinburgh’s Empire Theatre, a fallen lantern ignited a catastrophic fire. The Great Lafayette, ever distrustful of rivals stealing his secrets, had ordered the fire exits locked. The inferno tragically claimed his life, along with ten stagehands. Even in death, The Great Lafayette’s story took an unexpected turn. A body, initially believed to be his, was sent for cremation in Glasgow. However, fate had other plans. The real Great Lafayette was later found amidst the theatre’s ruins, identified by the distinctive rings adorning his fingers. Today, The Great Lafayette rests beneath this grand monument in Piershill Cemetery, reunited in death with his faithful dog, Beauty, who was laid to rest by his side.
