Imagine Dallas without a major river or seaport. Yet, it blossomed into a major commerce hub. It all started here at the Texas & Pacific Train Depot and Platform Plaque.

This plaque commemorates the vital role of the Texas & Pacific Railway. It boosted Dallas into prominence. The Texas & Pacific Railway Company was created in 1871. Its mission was grand. It aimed to build a southern transcontinental railroad. The line would stretch from Marshall, Texas to San Diego, California.

The Texas & Pacific arrived in Dallas in 1873. This was thanks to some savvy local politicians. They ensured the east-west line crossed here. This intersection transformed Dallas. It became the center for commerce in the Southwest. This was an unprecedented feat.

The arrival of the Houston & Texas Central Railroad also played a key role. Businessmen followed its progress from Houston. They sold goods to construction crews. They settled in Dallas expecting the Texas & Pacific Railway.

The junction of these two major rail lines drew people and businesses. Towns like McKinney and Ennis were suddenly at a disadvantage. By the early 1900s, the city grappled with its own success. Rail lines crisscrossed downtown creating chaos.

In 1911, the Kessler Plan emerged as a solution. This ambitious plan proposed a belt rail line around Dallas. It would serve the central business district. A new union station was built on the western edge of town. It consolidated seven railroads and five passenger depots.

In October 1916, the Dallas Union Terminal Company opened. It was the largest station of its kind in the Southwest. The Texas & Pacific played a vital role in this transformation.

During its peak in the late 1920s, Union Terminal saw nearly 80 arrivals and departures daily. Passengers enjoyed luxurious Pullman cars. They savored sumptuous meals in dining cars.

However, the rise of automobiles led to a decline in rail passenger service. By the 1960s, the Interstate Highway system and jet aircraft signaled the end of passenger trains in Dallas. In May 1969, the Texas Eagle made its final departure. Dallas was left without passenger trains.

But the story didn’t end there. The advent of Amtrak in 1971 revived passenger trains. Today, Amtrak is joined by DART’s Light Rail and TRE Commuter train service.

The Texas & Pacific Railway’s legacy remains significant. It shaped Dallas into the city we know today. While Dallas is now known as an aviation center, its early growth was thanks to the railroad. Without the intersection of these rail lines, McKinney may have become the metropolis of North Texas.
