“Praise to a Living City” is not just a name. It is what Add Fuel called his mural on Infante Santo Avenue. This avenue is an open-air gallery. It shows how art and history blend.

Today we explore the Revestimento azulejar do Viaduto da Avenida Infante Santo Mural. It is a highlight of Lisbon’s vibrant art scene. This mural is part of the Azulejo Route. This route shows the beauty of Portuguese tiles.

In 1959, artists decorated walls with tiles. These walls linked housing blocks on Infante Santo Avenue. Maria Keil, Carlos Botelho, Júlio Pomar, Alice Jorge, and Sá Nogueira were among them. Their art linked Portuguese culture to the sea.

Eduardo Nery added to the route in 1994 and 2001. He decorated an extra stairway and an underpass with tiles.

One stairway remained untouched until recently. Estrela Town Hall and the National Azulejo Museum invited Add Fuel to complete it. Diogo Machado is also known as Add Fuel. He is famous for reinterpreting Azulejo tiles.

Add Fuel drew inspiration from existing Azulejos. He paid tribute to Portuguese masters. His mural honors Maria Keil’s “O Mar”. It echoes the compositions of Carlos Botelho and Eduardo Nery.

Ropes and waves from Sá Nogueira’s panel appear in Add Fuel’s designs. He also used clean bands like those in Júlio Pomar and Alice Jorge’s mural.

Add Fuel aimed for a dynamic composition. It reflects the history of the Estrela neighborhood. It was once home to forgotten fishermen. They had a deep connection to the sea.

The project covered 200 square meters. Revigrés, a Portuguese ceramic company, helped make it possible. They have been in business for 40 years.

The Azulejo Route now has six staircases. Each staircase is decorated with Azulejo tiles from different eras. This enhances one of Lisbon’s busiest avenues.

Azulejo tiles have been key to Portuguese art for over 500 years. Add Fuel keeps this tradition alive. He reinvents Azulejo for the 21st century.

Maria Keil’s panel shows the sea with shells and boats. A fisherman dominates the scene. The panel blends with the staircase. It is a modern example of Azulejo in the city.

The original panel was damaged. A replica replaced it in 2005. The original is now in the Museu da Cidade.

Carlos Botelho’s panel is one of four from 1959. Lisbon City Council installed them on the Infante Santo Avenue stairways. Maria Keil, Alice Jorge, Júlio Pomar, and Rolando Sá Nogueira also contributed.

Add Fuel’s mural “Louvor da Vivacidade” completes the avenue. It honors the Estrela area. The artist drew inspiration from nearby panels.

The Azulejo Route is a testament to Portuguese artistry. It blends tradition with modern innovation. The Revestimento azulejar do Viaduto da Avenida Infante Santo Mural stands as a vibrant tribute. It honors Lisbon’s cultural heritage.
