Could a simple walk along a beach change the course of history? At the Toka Ebisu Shrine, the answer is a resounding yes. This shrine, nestled within the tranquil Higashi Park in Fukuoka’s Hakata ward, holds a story as captivating as the deities it enshrines. Toka Ebisu Shrine was founded over 400 years ago, in 1592. The story goes that a man named Takeuchi, returning from a pilgrimage to Kashii and Hakozaki shrines, stumbled upon a divine discovery. Washed ashore on the beach, he found statues of Ebisu and Daikoku. Recognizing the significance of this find, he established Toka Ebisu Shrine in their honor. Ebisu, the god of business prosperity, and Daikoku, the god of marriage, became the enshrined deities of this now-popular shrine. While Toka Ebisu Shrine offers a peaceful retreat throughout the year, it truly comes alive during its namesake festival, “Toka Ebisu,” held annually from January 8th to 11th. Over a million visitors flock to the shrine during these few days. They seek blessings for business success and family prosperity. The atmosphere crackles with energy as around 400 stalls line the shrine grounds. The shouts of “Oatari!” (lottery win) and “Suehirogari!” (growing prosperity promised) fill the air, as every lottery ticket sold guarantees a lucky prize. A unique tradition also marks this vibrant festival. On January 9th, around 3:00 pm, geisha girls make their way to the shrine in a procession known as “Kachimairi,” adding a touch of elegance to the festive atmosphere. Toka Ebisu Shrine embodies the spirit of hope and good fortune. It is a place where a chance encounter on a beach blossomed into a cherished tradition, inviting all who visit to share in its blessings.
