This wasn’t a surgical strike against military targets. This was an experiment in terror, designed to crush civilian morale. Lübeck, with its narrow streets and historic timber-framed buildings, was tragically perfect for this fiery trial. Imagine the full moon illuminating the Trave River, the light bouncing off the frost-covered roofs, just before the first wave of bombers arrived. 234 planes, Wellingtons and Stirlings among them, unleashed 400 tons of bombs. Incendiaries rained down after the “blockbusters” ripped open the city’s defenses. St. Mary’s, the cathedral, St. Peter’s – Lübeck’s iconic landmarks became infernos. Over 300 lives were lost that night. Thousands more were left homeless. The air was thick with smoke, the streets choked with rubble. The aftermath was horrific. Goebbels himself documented the scale of the devastation, acknowledging the blow to German morale. Yet, Lübeck persevered. The city rebuilt, its scars a testament to the horrors of war, a solemn reminder of what happened here during the 2. Weltkrieg.
