“A church service at 10:30?” a visitor might wonder, glancing at the schedule outside the Temple Évangélique. It might seem early, but this historic church, nestled on Rue de Lille, has a story to tell. A story deeply woven into the fabric of Protestant history in France. The Temple Évangélique stands as a beacon of the Baptist faith in Paris. Its story begins not here, but with a small group gathering in 1839 on Rue Saint-Étienne-du-Mont. As their numbers grew, so did their need for a proper space, leading them through various locations in Paris. Each move marked a chapter in their journey, finally culminating in the construction of this very church. And it’s thanks to the generosity of the American Baptist Missionary Committee in Boston that this architectural beauty graces the Parisian landscape. The first stone was laid on a poignant date: commemorating the third centenary of the Saint Bartholomew’s Day massacre. This act served as a powerful symbol, etching the Baptist community into the narrative of French Protestantism. Then, on September 14, 1873, the Temple Évangélique, with its 700-seat auditorium, opened its doors for the very first time.
