Perhaps, the most interesting thing about Hadfield is its rather recent official creation. Before 1999, this suburb was actually part of Glenroy.

Hadfield now stands as its own distinct place. But do you know who Hadfield is named after?

It’s named for Rupert Hadfield. He was once the shire president for Broadmeadows Shire.

Imagine the discussions that led to this decision. Someone suggested they honor Hadfield’s contributions. It stuck and now we have the suburb of Hadfield.

Interestingly, Hadfield’s development significantly increased after World War II. The Hadfield Post Office opened in 1957 marking a new chapter.

Before this boom, parts of Hadfield were used for sheep grazing. In the late 1940s, developers marketed it as the Park Estate. However, early residents faced challenges. Roads were often quagmires. Rocks damaged many cars.

To solve the water seepage problem, a retarding basin was built on Box Forest Road. Slowly, Hadfield transformed from rural land to a residential area.

A primary school opened on Exeter Street in 1964. It was first named North Park. By 1968, the last unsealed roads were finally paved.

Shopping became more convenient. A shopping center was built on the western edge of Hadfield. Smaller corner stores popped up.

Hadfield gained community facilities. These included neighborhood reserves a community center and a Catholic school.

However, by the 1990s the suburb changed again. The state primary and high schools closed in 1996.

Although Hadfield High School closed it is now the location of Pascoe Vale Gardens a retirement village.

Today, Hadfield is home to a diverse community. The suburb is known for its Italian Arabic and English speaking residents.

Hadfield offers various ways to get around. There are bus routes that connect Hadfield to nearby areas. Cyclists can use the Upfield Bike Path and the Western Ring Road Trail.

Fawkner Station is actually located within Hadfield despite its name. It sits within the Fawkner Crematorium and Memorial Park.

So as you explore Hadfield remember its journey. It transformed from grazing land to a quagmire estate to the established suburb we see today. Hadfield stands as a testament to community growth and change in Melbourne’s north.
