“A castle fit for a king,” a young boy whispered, tugging at his mother’s hand as they approached Schloss Abtnaundorf. His words weren’t entirely wrong. Schloss Abtnaundorf, nestled in the Leipzig district of Schönefeld-Abtnaundorf, exudes a regal air. The current Schloss Abtnaundorf isn’t ancient, but it carries echoes of centuries past. The original estate dates back to the 13th century, initially owned by the Peterskloster Merseburg. This is where the “Abt” (Abbot) in Abtnaundorf originates. The estate saw numerous tenants and owners over the years, each leaving their mark on the land. Christian Gottlob Frege II acquired the estate in 1789, and it remained within the Frege family until 1916. They shaped Abtnaundorf significantly. The family began developing parts of the extensive landscape park in the mid-18th century. This park, now a protected area, draws many visitors, especially on weekends. Its tranquil paths offer a peaceful escape, just a short distance from Leipzig’s bustling city center. Unfortunately, the Schloss itself and its immediate grounds are no longer accessible to the public. A new owner has meticulously renovated the schloss, making it a private residence once more. The year 1892 marked a turning point for Schloss Abtnaundorf. Arnold Woldemar von Frege-Weltzien, a descendant of Christian Gottlob Frege II, demolished the old manor house. He commissioned architect Peter Dybwad to construct the grand schloss we see today, completed in 1893. It was a significant investment, costing around a million marks, earning Abtnaundorf the nickname “Millionendorf” (million village). Imagine horse-drawn carriages gliding along the Reiterallee, once known as Kastanienallee, leading to a magnificent mausoleum built for the Frege family. Sadly, this mausoleum was destroyed after 1945. After being incorporated into Leipzig in 1930, Schloss Abtnaundorf took on new roles. It served as a city estate, a teacher training center, and even part of St. Georg Hospital’s children’s ward. Today, while the schloss stands as a testament to its rich history, its grandeur remains hidden behind private walls. However, the enduring spirit of Schloss Abtnaundorf and its surrounding park continues to enchant visitors, offering a glimpse into a bygone era of aristocratic splendor.
