Revealed in January 1971 a vision ignited a new chapter. It was a call to build a place of worship. This is the story of New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church.
New Mt. Moriah’s journey began when Rev. Marvell Williams received a divine vision. God wanted him to create a new space for His people. With no initial meeting place, the church rented then purchased property. The address was 1709 West Roosevelt Road. The building needed many repairs.
Under the leadership of Roy Lee Williams and Rev. Robert Williams, the church took shape. Roy Lee Williams served as Chairman of the Deacon Board. Rev. Robert Williams is the current Pastor. The church later bought two adjoining lots. They expected to build a grander church.
In March 1971, the Gospel Choir was formed. Vertlee Williams, Lorene Williams, Olevia Thomas, and Bennie Williams took on leadership roles. Lorene Williams is the current First Lady. Bennie Williams was the church’s first musician.
June 1971 saw the organization of the Usher Board. Erma Williams became President. Versie Martin was elected Vice President. Warren Thomas and Ira Martin joined later that year.
The Pastor’s Aide Board formed shortly after the church’s start. Clara Williams, Beatrice Sanders, and Nora Martin were its first members.
August 1971 marked the church’s first revival. Fifteen candidates sought baptism. They were baptized in November. That same month, the Junior Choir was established. Some original members’ children and grandchildren now belong to the Inspirational and Junior Choirs.
By 1984, the church had grown. It moved to 1501 North Harding. Eventually they bought the property. From 1984 to 1989, they ran a daycare center. A Head Start Program was housed there from 1989 to 2013. The church also ministered via television from 2000 to 2011. This all happened under Pastor Marvell Williams’ leadership.
Rev. Robert Williams became Pastor on December 16, 2013. Under his guidance, the church continues to progress. He believes God is with him. He will continue to lead the flock.
New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. It shows vision and commitment. It is a place where grace leads the way. From humble beginnings to a thriving community, the church’s story is one of divine guidance and unwavering dedication.
