Gazing across the shimmering Geylang River, we find the elegant Tanjong Rhu Bridge. It’s not just a bridge, it’s a testament to Singapore’s transformation. Tanjong Rhu Bridge, opened in July 1998, stands as a symbol of renewal, connecting the upscale condominiums of Tanjong Rhu to the vibrant Singapore Sports Hub. Before the gleaming towers and stadiums graced this landscape, Tanjong Rhu buzzed with a different kind of activity. Shipyards lined the river, their clang and clamor filling the air until 1985. The government, envisioning a more glamorous future for this waterfront, encouraged the shipyards to relocate, paving the way for the luxurious residences we see today. The bridge itself, a pedestrian-only marvel of steel and concrete, cost a cool S$5.1 million in 1998. The Public Works Department, later privatized as CPG Corporation, envisioned a structure that would be more than just a crossing. They wanted a landmark, a “mini-version” of iconic suspension bridges like the Golden Gate. So, despite the Geylang River not requiring the vast span of a suspension bridge, they opted for this design for its aesthetic appeal. Tanjong Rhu Bridge stretches 180 meters long and 4 meters wide, its deck suspended by a network of 100 one-inch-thick hangar cables. These cables, in turn, are attached to two massive 4.5-inch-thick main cables, anchored to 19-meter-high A-frame towers at either end. It’s a beautiful blend of form and function, a testament to engineering ingenuity. Imagine strolling across this bridge in the evening, the city lights twinkling around you. The bridge itself is illuminated, its outline glowing against the darkening sky, guiding you towards the excitement of the Sports Hub or back to the tranquility of Tanjong Rhu. Tanjong Rhu Bridge isn’t just a pathway; it’s a story of transformation, a link between the industrial past and the dynamic present.
