A whispered prayer echoes through time. This is Masjid Nurul Mustawa a place of profound spiritual significance in Jakarta. Founded in 2000 by Al Habib Hasan bin Ja’far Assegaf its name meaning “Light of Choice” reflects its mission. Initially it began as small Quranic and Zikir gatherings in homes.
The growth of Masjid Nurul Mustawa was remarkable. In 2001 esteemed religious figures Al Habib Umar bin Hafidz and Al Habib Anis Bin Alwi al-Habsyi visited. They formally inaugurated the Majelis Nurul Musthofa. The gatherings expanded from just ten people to hundreds.
By 2002 scholars from Saudi Arabia Yemen Madinah and Malaysia joined the Majelis. Al Habib Salim Assyatiri taught a special invocation. The Majelis flourished. It moved from homes to mosques reaching about 50 mosques by 2003. The teachings of Al Habib Abdullah Bin Alwi Al Haddad’s Nasahadiniyyah were central.
The congregation grew exponentially. In 2004 thousands attended the Majelis. Prominent teachers such as KH Abdul Hayyie Naim Ust Adnan Idris and Ust Imam Wahyudi further enriched its teachings. Formalizing its structure the Majelis established the Nurul Musthofa foundation in 2005. It received official recognition from the Indonesian Religious Affairs Department.
Expansion continued. The Majelis’s reach expanded from 50 to 250 mosques in Jakarta by 2006. That year Al Habib Hasan bin Ja’far Assegaf’s Jakarta residence became the secretariat. A 700-square-meter temporary Majelis was built behind his home in 2007. This humble beginning blossomed into the significant spiritual center we see today. Masjid Nurul Mustawa stands as a testament to faith community and the enduring power of spiritual pursuit.
