The 21st Street Co-op is located at 707 West 21st Street. It is a short walk from the University of Texas at Austin campus. This co-op has housed students since 1974.
The 21st Street Co-op is more than just a place to live. It is a haven for open-mindedness. Creativity flourishes here. Adventure is always on the horizon. It is the only clothing-optional co-op in the College Houses organization.
Here, 100 residents share suites. These suites include living rooms. They also have kitchenettes and semi-private baths. The suites are often personalized. Murals decorate the walls.
The co-op runs on a labor system. Residents contribute four hours of labor each week. This keeps costs down. Members cook, clean, and maintain the house. It builds community.
The 21st Street Co-op is known for its vibrant social scene. The “Commons” area hosts bands and parties. Weekday evenings often find members relaxing on the back porch. Some are jamming in the Commons. Themed parties and in-house events happen frequently on weekends.
The 21st Street Co-op has a unique history. In 1974, the buildings weren’t ready when students arrived. They stayed in temporary housing. This was at the former Brownstone Apartments. It was half a mile away.
Meals were initially served at the Ark Co-op. It was the 21st Street Co-op’s “big sister”. In November 1974, the 21st Street Co-op officially opened.
The co-op faced challenges over the years. A deck collapsed in 1987. A resident fell from the roof in the 1980s.
