Beyond these walls, what echoes of faith and learning still resonate? We are standing before the Chapelle du lycée Sainte-Geneviève. This chapel is part of a larger story. It involves a school with a rich history and an important mission.

Founded in 1854, the lycée Sainte-Geneviève began in Paris. Frédéric Studer founded it. It was located on Rue Lhomond. The school quickly became known for its rigorous academics. It prepared students for France’s top grandes écoles.

The Chapelle du lycée Sainte-Geneviève is not just a place of worship. It symbolizes the values of the school. “Aimer Servir” or “Servir” is the school’s motto. This translates to “Love to Serve”. It reflects a commitment to both intellectual and spiritual growth.

In 1913, the school moved to Versailles. This was due to laws separating the Church and State. The new location included a chapel. This chapel became central to the school’s identity.

The early days in Paris were marked by growth. By 1857, over 200 students attended the school. The Franco-Prussian War in 1870 transformed the school into a military hospital. Père Ducoudray, the rector, was arrested and killed during the Commune.

Despite these challenges, the school persevered. It faced threats of closure in 1880. The Jesuit priests were expelled. Lay teachers and diocesan priests stepped in. They ensured the school’s continuity.

The move to Versailles brought new opportunities. The property included existing buildings. These were the Notre-Dame building, the chapel, and the Saint-François Régis building. A new building, Sainte-Geneviève, was constructed. This accommodated the growing number of boarding students.

During World War I, the school became a military hospital again. After the war, the anti-clerical laws eased. Jesuit priests returned to lead the school. World War II disrupted the school’s activities. German police actions and the STO created difficulties.

In 1953, the street was renamed Rue de l’École des Postes. This honored the school’s origins in Paris. The 1960s brought significant changes. Students gained more involvement in school life. The school admitted its first female student in 1970.

Today, the Chapelle du lycée Sainte-Geneviève stands as a testament. It represents faith, service, and academic excellence. It serves as a reminder of the school’s long and storied past. The chapel remains a vital part of the lycée Sainte-Geneviève community. Its presence is a symbol of enduring values.
