Purple Mini, a fateful sycamore, and a legacy of glam rock converge right here at Marc Bolan’s Rock Shrine. This place is more than just a memorial. It’s a testament to the enduring impact of Marc Bolan.

Marc Bolan, the charismatic frontman of T. Rex, met an untimely end. The fatal car crash occurred here in 1977. His girlfriend, Gloria Jones, drove the car. It struck a steel-reinforced fence post before hitting the sycamore tree.

Fans began visiting the crash site soon after his death. They left flowers and candles. The sycamore became known as the Bolan Tree. It is a living part of this monument.

The Marc Bolan Rock Shrine itself features a black etched stone monument. A bronze bust of Bolan stands proudly. The bust was unveiled in 1997 on what would have been Bolan’s 50th birthday.

The T-Rex Action Group cares for this memorial. They built steps up the muddy embankment. This ensured the Bolan Tree’s safety.

In 2005, memorial plaques were added. These honor other members of T. Rex who have passed away. Steve Peregrin Took, Steve Currie, Mickey Finn, and Dino Dines are all remembered.

The English Tourist Board recognized this site in 2007. It is one of 113 “Sites of Rock ‘n’ Roll Importance” in England. Only Marc Bolan, Jimi Hendrix, and Freddie Mercury are listed individually.

Marc Bolan was born on September 30, 1947. He died on September 16, 1977. He was just two weeks shy of his 30th birthday.

Canadian artist Jean Robillard sculpted the bust of Bolan. Fee Warner, founder of the T-Rex Action Group, funded the sculpture. The Marc Bolan Rock Shrine sits on Queen’s Ride near Gipsy Lane.

Gloria Jones drove Marc Bolan’s purple Mini. Rolan Bolan, Marc’s son, unveiled the monument.

In 1998, the T-Rex Action Group received a lease. This gave them ownership and responsibility for the Bolan Tree. They also care for the bust, memorial stone, and steps.

Visiting Marc Bolan’s Rock Shrine offers a chance to connect with glam rock history. Feel the love and admiration that fans continue to share. Leaving a small memento here can be a special way to pay homage. The Rock Shrine stands as a lasting tribute to Marc Bolan’s musical genius. It ensures that his memory and music live on.
