Have you ever pictured NASCAR racers speeding through downtown city streets? At the Chicago Street Course, that vision became a reality. The Chicago Street Course is a 2.14-mile street circuit winding through the heart of Grant Park. This track made history in 2023, hosting the first-ever NASCAR Cup Series street race, the Grant Park 220. The roar of the engines echoed off the skyscrapers as drivers navigated tight turns and sped down iconic streets like Columbus Drive, Lake Shore Drive, and even Michigan Avenue.

The Chicago Street Course wasn’t always a concrete reality. It began as a virtual track on iRacing in 2021, designed for the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series. The virtual race sparked interest, and soon conversations began about bringing the track to life. In 2022, NASCAR announced the Grant Park 220 would be added to the 2023 Cup Series. The inaugural race weekend also included the Xfinity Series’ The Loop 121. However, a planned IMSA race was canceled and later replaced with another Xfinity Series event.

The Chicago Street Course presented unique challenges. The track’s twelve turns, several of them 90-degree corners, left little room for error. Drivers had to adjust their strategies. They were used to wider road courses with more runoff area. The tight confines of the city streets meant any mistake could send a car straight into a barrier. Despite concerns about crashes and noise, the event drew a large crowd. Many attendees were new to NASCAR.

The 2023 race weekend was unfortunately marred by thunderstorms, which shortened both races. Scheduled concerts featuring The Chainsmokers and Miranda Lambert were also canceled due to the weather. Despite the setbacks, the Chicago Street Course proved to be a thrilling addition to the NASCAR calendar. New Zealand driver Shane van Gisbergen made history. He won the inaugural Grant Park 220 in his first-ever NASCAR race.

The future of the Chicago Street Course beyond its initial three-year contract is uncertain. While the roar of engines through downtown Chicago brought a unique excitement, the event also faced criticism. Residents voiced concerns about road closures, noise levels, and potential risks to nearby buildings, including the Art Institute of Chicago. The city will need to carefully consider these factors as it decides whether to continue hosting this exciting but disruptive event.
