Established in 1926, Harding High School has been a cornerstone of education on the East Side, witnessing generations of students pass through its hallowed halls. Originally, Harding High School didn’t neatly fit into the categories of junior or senior high. Students attended from eighth to tenth grade before completing their diploma at another East Side high school. However, that changed in 1928 when Harding became a full-fledged four-year high school. The first graduating class, a mere 32 students, received their diplomas in June 1932. Over the years, Harding High School underwent several expansions to accommodate its growing student population. The need for shifts due to overcrowding led to the construction of a brand-new building in 1961. This new structure, located at East Third Street and Hazelwood Avenue, opened its doors to students in September 1963, marking a new chapter in Harding’s history.
