Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live like royalty? Here at Government House in Melbourne, you can get a glimpse of that life. Government House is the official residence of the Governor of Victoria. It’s a symbol of the state’s history, governance, and heritage. The story of Government House begins in 1839. The colonial government decided to establish a permanent residence for the Governor. They chose a prominent hill overlooking the city, known then as Government Domain and now as Kings Domain. Construction began in 1871, under the watchful eye of architect William Wardell. He chose the Victorian Italianate style. This style features grand proportions, elaborate ornamentation, and classical elements. The design reflects the opulence of the Victorian era. The construction wasn’t without its challenges. There were financial constraints and debates over the design. Government House finally opened in 1876. It featured a grand entrance hall, state rooms, and private quarters for the Governor and their family. The house also boasts extensive gardens and grounds. Interestingly, Queen Victoria initially objected to the design. The ballroom was larger than the one at Buckingham Palace. She requested they reduce the building’s size. However, by the time her message reached Melbourne, construction was already underway. Inside Government House, you’ll find antique furniture, a Steinway grand piano, and the State Chair, made around 1859. The ballroom’s first event was a lavish celebration for the Queen’s Birthday Ball. The room was originally painted white. It acquired its distinctive blue hue in 1889, after a redecoration to celebrate the arrival of the Governor and his wife. Over the years, Government House has hosted countless events, from extravagant parties to state ceremonies. During World War I, the Red Cross used the ballroom as a depot to make and dispatch surgical gowns and bandages. Today, Government House continues to serve as the official residence. It’s also open to the public for tours. You can explore its rich history, admire its architectural beauty, and experience a touch of Victorian grandeur. Government House in Melbourne stands as a testament to Victoria’s past, present, and future.
