Safiye Sultan’s ambition echoed in the cries of the gulls circling the Golden Horn. She envisioned a mosque, a monument to her power, rising on this very spot. This is the Yeni Camii, the “New Mosque”, though centuries have passed since its completion in 1665. Yeni Camii’s story begins decades earlier, in 1597, with Safiye, mother of Sultan Mehmed III. Her vision was grand: a mosque that would dominate the Istanbul skyline. She commissioned architect Davut Ağa, a student of the legendary Sinan. The location she chose, however, was a problem. It was a poor, predominantly Jewish neighborhood. Residents were paid to relocate, fueling resentment and rumors that the mosque was a veiled attempt to disempower the community. Construction began, but the project was plagued by setbacks. Water seepage and financial difficulties slowed progress. Then, with Mehmed III’s death, Safiye lost her position and her influence. The Yeni Camii sat unfinished, a testament to a dream deferred. Decades passed. The mosque stood incomplete, a silent reproach to the city. Then, another powerful woman stepped in: Turhan Hatice Sultan, mother of Sultan Mehmed IV. She revived the project, hiring architect Mustafa Ağa to complete what Davut Ağa had started. Finally, in 1665, the Yeni Camii was finished. The result is a breathtaking blend of Ottoman architectural elements. The towering minarets reach towards the heavens, framing the cascading domes that lead down to the central dome, a masterpiece of engineering and artistry. Inside, the walls are adorned with vibrant Iznik tiles, depicting intricate floral and geometric patterns. The Yeni Camii stands as a testament to the enduring power of ambition. It is a symbol of two women’s determination, a story etched in stone and tile, overlooking the bustling waters of the Golden Horn.
