“A summer retreat fit for a Marquis,” echoes in my mind as we approach Quinta Alegre. This isn’t just another estate. Quinta Alegre whispers tales of nobility, leisure, and artistry all at once.

Quinta Alegre began its story in the early 18th century. Manuel Teles da Silva, the 1st Marquis of Alegrete, envisioned this place as his summer escape. He started building the palace and its surrounding gardens. The Marquis wanted a place of simple elegance.

The palace at Quinta Alegre features late-Baroque architecture. It has a rectangular layout with two stories. Wrought-iron balconies adorn the upper floor. Stone details accent the corners and walls. Quinta Alegre is an example of refined taste.

Inside Quinta Alegre, prepare to be amazed by the tilework. These azulejos were added in the second half of the 18th century. They bring color and detail to the estate. In 1819, the interiors received another upgrade. Neoclassical paintings graced the ceilings and walls. This was thanks to José Bento de Araújo, the owner at the time. The iron gate bears the date 1819 to mark this transformation.

Quinta Alegre changed hands in 1983. The Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa purchased the estate. They started a rehabilitation project. It was completed in 2017.

The gardens of Quinta Alegre reflect its baroque origins. They exemplify one of Lisbon’s most exquisite recreation farms. Once restored by Santa Casa, the palace took on recreational functions.

Today, Quinta Alegre stands as a Property of Public Interest. Its address is Campo Amoreiras 93. Quinta Alegre is not just a building. It is a canvas painted with history. It is a garden blooming with stories. It is a peaceful retreat in bustling Lisbon.
