Gazing at Constitution Park, can you imagine children of all abilities playing together? This Downers Grove gem, once a simple neighborhood park, has transformed into an inclusive playground wonderland. Constitution Park, established in 1974 on the site of the historic Lincoln School, was initially a modest space with play equipment and open lawn. It wasn’t until 1987 that the park received its official name, Constitution Park, chosen by local students to commemorate the Constitution’s bicentennial. Now, fast forward to today, and Constitution Park boasts a playground designed for everyone. Wheelchair-accessible ramps, sensory experiences, and interactive equipment like a merry-go-round, music panels, and a sensory cove climber create a truly inclusive play space. But Constitution Park is more than just a playground. A new pavilion offers shelter, while a walking path meanders through the park, featuring a StoryWalk®. In partnership with the Downers Grove Public Library and EQuality Downers Grove, the StoryWalk® displays laminated pages from a children’s book, encouraging reading and outdoor enjoyment. The park’s renovation, completed in 2024, was made possible by three grants. A DCEO grant funded playground equipment, an OSLAD grant supported park development, and a GameTime grant contributed to inclusive equipment. This last grant also designates Constitution Park as a National Demonstration Site for Inclusive Play, allowing park users to provide valuable feedback. The transformation of Constitution Park reflects a community’s dedication to inclusion and accessible recreation. It’s a place where everyone, regardless of ability, can experience the joy of play.
