Considering a final resting place designed with simplicity, integrity, and respect? That’s the essence of Gardens of Peace Muslim Cemetery. It serves the Muslim community in Greater London. This cemetery represents a unique blend of architecture, landscape, built environment and technology.
Gardens of Peace Muslim Cemetery began as a charitable project in 1998. Four individuals founded it to meet the burial needs of East London’s Muslim community. Those founders were Mehboob Patel, Farouk Ismail, Makbul Hussain Mubeen and Gulem Mahomed Nadat. The organization became a registered charity that same year.
The first site opened in November 2002 after much hard work. This was on Elmbridge Road. Five Oaks was later acquired. It began operating as a cemetery in 2017. Maylands was acquired in 2007. However, it only came into use in September 2024. This was after a very lengthy planning permission process.
Gardens of Peace has exceeded the founders’ expectations. It now addresses the burial needs of a large section of Greater London’s Muslim community. Many others contributed to the project’s early stages. They continue to play pivotal roles in furthering the charity’s work. Mohamed Omer MBE is responsible for external affairs.
Gardens of Peace is a non-profit organization. It is not supported by local authorities. It relies on Lillah donations and burial fees. These funds maintain the cemetery. They also pay staff wages. The money helps build a fund for future maintenance and new land development. Gardens of Peace Muslim Cemetery stands as a testament to thoughtful design. It reflects the community’s needs. It ensures a dignified and respectful place of rest.
